Title
Coastal Protection Works at Stornoway Airort
Description

Stornoway Airport is located immediately west of Stornoway Town on the Island of Lewis. It is a major transport hub for the Western Isles. The northern and western perimeters of the airport comprise sand dunes and estuary, onto a beach which opens out to the Atlantic Ocean (‘The Minch’). HIAL’s ongoing programme of erosion monitoring has identified that these perimeters have been subject to coastal erosion over decades to the point that they now pose a threat to the infrastructure systems at the Airport. Those locations are identified as the East Beach; North End Revetment and North West Beach. HIAL has commissioned a Design Consultant to develop suitable coastal protection design solutions at the indicated areas to limit future erosion, protect the airfield assets and maintain surety of airfield operations. HIAL will be seeking to procure a Contractor during the 2nd to 3rd quarter of 2021 with construction commencing during the last quarter 2021 and completing during the last quarter 2022. The scheme solutions currently in design proposes to install Reno Mattress and Baskets along the Beach/Dune interface, to provide a semi-hard defence to erosion. It builds upon similar work that has been successfully completed in phases at Benbecula over the last 20 years. An element of rock armour construction is also required to supplement an existing defence that extends the runway out onto the beach.
