-Purpose The Coal Authority operates over 70 mine water treatment schemes across the UK; these schemes primarily treat coal mine waters with a growing number of metal mine treatment schemes. In addition the Coal Authority has an active R&D department which undertakes a variety of UK wide mine water treatment trials. The Coal Authority R&D team focus on laboratory and field scale trials on both metal and coal mine waters with the aim of developing novel treatment technologies and improving existing treatment technologies on our schemes. In addition, the Coal Authority undertakes a range of works as part of a Public Safety & Subsidence activities that involve the monitoring and remediation of properties impacted by mining hazards including the build-up radioactive gases. -Objective The Contract is divided into two lots: Lot 1 - covers the laboratory chemical analysis of samples and includes supporting services such as the supply and delivery of sampling materials, the collection of samples from various areas within the UK, the production of results certificates of analyses and the disposal of waste samples. It is envisaged that the analysis of mine water and related solid materials (including analysis of potential Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) on rare occasions) will be the predominant element (Lot 1).
