The Coroner has a statutory duty under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 to certify and register deaths for any cases referred. Post-mortem samples are mostly utilised however ante-mortem sampling is occasionally required. Samples taken are sent for Toxicological testing to ascertain the presence of the requested drugs or alcohol. The Coroner utilises the results of Toxicological screening in ascertaining the cause of death which can be used in court proceedings at inquest, therefore a clear report must be provided per sample.
